5 Reasons Stana Katic Deserves a Golden Globe Nomination

By in December 19, 2011 • Filed in: Articles, Castle

When we read the complete list of Golden Globe nominees this morning, we were shocked — not one Castle nomination! And just off the heels of yesterday’s SAG awards snub. What the heck, right?

As much as it pains us to say it, we’re kind of getting used to Castle getting shut out in the Best TV Drama category, which is why we had extra high hopes for some of the other Globe categories — namely Best Actress in a TV Drama.

Stana Katic has been on fire this past year! Her performance as Detective Kate Beckett on Castle has touched millions of loyal fans and continues to attract new ones each week. We simply can’t think of anyone else more deserving of a nomination in the Best Actress category.

Here are five (of many!) reasons we think Stana should have received a Golden Globe nomination this year:

5. Stana Has Given New Life to Kate Beckett

This past year, Stana has proven she has the acting chops to share the spotlight with Hollywood A-lister Nathan Fillion.

In Seasons 3 and 4, she took a relatively one-dimensional character and breathed new life into her. We’ve witnessed Detective Kate Beckett transform from closed-off, tightly-wound cop, into an emotional, thoughtful, and complex woman, all thanks to Stana’s talent and dedication to the role.

4. Stana Is Stunning

We can pretend like Stana’s striking features and perfect physique have nothing to do with our love for her, but let’s be honest — her beauty is one of the things that makes her so special. Who else can chase murderers through the streets of New York City and look so darn hot while doing it?

Plus, when she gives Richard Castle that “I hate you, but secretly love you” look as she bites her lower lip? Yeah, we die.

3. Stana Is Loved Around the World

Just ask any one of Stana’s loyal fans — they can’t get enough of the 33-year-old Canadian actress.

Her fans hail from all over the world, as Stana herself speaks six different languages. She makes it a priority to connect with her fans online and through her website, something many stars hire a public relations to team to do for them. She answers fan questions on Twitter, posts new pictures on her Facebook page, and even features fan art on her website.

2. Stana Makes the Castle/Beckett Connection What It Is

We adore Nathan Fillion, and he’s shared the small screen with some great actresses, but with Stana, there’s a palpable chemistry between the two leads, making them TV’s most perfect “will-they-or-won’t-they” couple.

But more importantly, she gives Beckett just the right amount of vulnerability, which has made us privy to a part of her character no one else gets to see — the part that’s madly in love with Richard Castle.

1. Season 4, Episode 9: “Kill Shot”

Two words: Epic. Performance. Clearly, the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association didn’t watch this episode.

Why Stana Katic Deserves Some Golden Globe Love

By in December 15, 2011 • Filed in: Articles, Castle
Every year around this time there is a tradition as old as lighting the candles or trimming the tree: harping about Golden Globe snubs. It’s like complaining about the Emmys, only with the Golden Globes there’s a guarantee that at least some of our favorite stars will be drunk at the show. Or at the very least they will be offended by host Ricky Gervais. So let me pre-register my complaint: Castle‘s Stana Katic should be nominated this year.

Why Stana Katic and why this year? Well first let’s cover what sets this year apart from the others.

If you had suggested that Stana Katic had deserved some love from the Globes a few seasons ago, I might have only tepidly agreed. After all, while Katic was a sturdy, reliable performer, she was often merely the straight man to Nathan Fillion’s more comedic and flamboyant Castle.

It’s not that Katic wasn’t good in her role — it’s that Kate Beckett was still coming into her own. She had a few episodes that really showcased her range, but for the most part she was dropping crime exposition and setting up sexual tension with Fillion.

This year, however, is a whole different beast. Stana Katic’s role has gotten increasingly meatier and she no longer feels like the female sidekick in the Nathan Fillion show. Castle might be named after Fillion’s crime author, but this season it’s Katic’s tough policewoman Beckett carrying the weighty emotional story-arc.

Starting from a re-emergent obsession with her mother’s death during the third season and continuing on with the fallout from her shooting, Katic’s excellence has been uniform throughout. Watching the layers of tough, steely Kate Beckett unravel has been a delight. Scenes with her therapist have explored the emotional toll of being shot by a sniper and hearing those three little words from Castle. The show is finally ready to deal head-on with what lies beneath Beckett’s tough, no-nonsense exterior and that’s given Stana Katic a lot of material to play. In every instance Katic has risen to the challenge, making Beckett a three-dimensional character whose flaws are as lived-in and real as her virtues.

This brings us to “Kill Shot”, the episode where a sharp-shooting killer unravels Beckett completely. Katic brought both strength and desperation to her performance. As Beckett desperately tried to keep it together, the traumatic memories of her own shooting threatened to overwhelm her. Katic was perfect in her depiction of helplessness and rage, and even better when Beckett came to accept what had happened to her. It was a show-stopping performance.

It should also be noted that although it’s her standout dramatic performances that make her worthy of a Globe nomination this year, she is an excellent comedic actress as well. Castle fans love the show for its sense of humor, and the delightful back-and-forth between Castle and Beckett is a big part of the show’s well-developed lighter side.

So what are Stana Katic’s chances at getting a little something Golden on her mantle? Sadly, my guess is that her chances are very slim.

Despite a strong year, Castle isn’t viewed as a very serious drama, and serious, award-bait cable shows have been scooping up all the awards. Plus, this year Katic will have to compete with the tough-as-nails women of Westeros as Game of Thrones smashes onto the scene.
Still, the awards always love a good hard-nosed crime fighter. Law and Order: SVU‘s Mariska Hargitay has been nominated for a Globe twice and won once. Award shows love the familiar Law & Order brand, maybe this year they’ll want to nominate another tough-but-vulnerable female detective?

As for me, I’ll be pulling for Stana Katic’s name to appear among the list of nominees on Thursday. But I won’t be surprised if I don’t see her there, and that’s a shame.

What do you think? Do you think Stana Katic deserve a Golden Globe nomination? Or is she overrated? Sound off in the comments!

Castle Is Heading for a Wedding – Will It Get Rick and Kate Ready for Romance?

By in December 14, 2011 • Filed in: Articles, Castle, Spoilers

Warning: Light spoilers in this article! Read at your own risk!

When ABC’s Castle returns with fresh episodes on Monday, Jan. 9, the first episode back will feature the wedding of Detective Kevin Ryan to the lovely Jenny Duffy-O’Malley. But will the undeniable romance of the big day spill over into the long-simmering but oft-stifled Castle/Beckett relationship, and maybe light a fire under those two?

For starters, Stana Katic tells us this much: Romance was in abundant supply during the filming of the episode, seeing as the fictional nuptials starred real-life marrieds Seamus and Juliana Dever, who play Kevin and Jenny.

“It was such a beautiful thing,” Beckett’s portrayer tells TVLine of shooting the ceremony. “I loved being able to see Juliana walk in with her wedding gown, because it was the kind of gown that she wanted when they were young actors getting married but they didn’t have the finances they needed to make the wedding as large as maybe it would have been in their dreams. This was a chance to kind of do a ‘second take,’ and it was fantastic to be a part of that real-life experience as well as that ‘movie-life’ experience.”

But returning to the million-dollar question — might the exchange of vows get Rick and Kate in the mood to finally take a leap of their own, and pursue a romance? – Katic echoes that which Seamus Dever recently told TV Guide Magazine. (After all, “Caskett” did just spend an entire episode handcuffed to each other, for better or for worse; anything else is merely legal documentation.)

“There’s a bit of foreshadowing for the future, yes,” she told us with a playful chuckle.

Castle: Mega Buzz Spoilers 12/13/11

By in December 14, 2011 • Filed in: Castle, Spoilers

Warning: Spoilers! Do not read, if you wish to remain spoiler free!

So excited to hear that Jennifer Beals is coming to Castle. What else can you tell me about the two-parter? — Eliot

ADAM: Beals plays Sophia, a CIA operative who’s in town to capture a former Navy Seal who has gone rogue. (He’s taken to abducting young women.) As you might expect, a bit of a turf war between the CIA and the NYPD will ensue, but that’s nothing compared to the tension between Sophia and Beckett, who learn that they have a lot in common. (Think Nikki Heat.)
